I’m Gina, and in 2026, my husband Matt and I discovered mahjong. It quickly became an obsession, and before long, we were imagining what we might bring to the table ourselves.
There is so much to love about American Mahjong. The challenge of the game, the friendships, the laughter, and the pleasure of gathering around a beautiful table. Choosing the colors, patterns, and accessories becomes part of the fun. Your table can feel like an expression of you, whether your style is soft and romantic, bright and playful, or a little unexpected.
As we explored the world of mahjong, we found an incredible variety of designs. We also found ourselves searching for something particular: well-made pieces with art inspired by history, culture, nature, and the charm of vintage styles. Those influences had been part of our lives long before we learned the game.
That part of our story begins with Matt.
A lifelong maker, Matt has always had more creative interests than hours in the day. Stories and poetry, painting and sketching, woodworking, and a career in software have all given him ways to bring ideas to life. Four years ago, that curiosity found a home on Etsy through SagesOfThePast, our original shop.
Sages grew from a love of the worlds art can open up: a garden from an old botanical print, a colorful scene drawn from folklore, an intricate pattern with roots in another place and time. The hope was to bring some of that beauty and imagination into the things people use every day.
NouveauMahj brings that artistic spirit to a game we now love sharing.
Together, we’re blending vintage influences and distinctive artistic traditions with the color and personality of modern American Mahjong. We use a mix of creative methods, including traditional and digital techniques, modern AI art tools, photography, and detailed editing, to bring our ideas to life. We care about the quality of the finished pieces, how they work during play, and how beautifully they come together on your table.
