Caring for Your NouveauMahj Racks
Keep your acrylic racks clear, steady, and beautiful for years of games.
In American Mah Jongg, your rack does a lot of work. It holds your hand upright, steadies your wall, and pushes that wall into play every turn. It's also part of how your table looks. Caring for your NouveauMahj racks takes very little time, and the routine is simple.
Your racks arrive with care instructions. Keep them handy, and when in doubt, follow them.
After Every Game
Clear the rack. Remove all the tiles, then check the tile ledge, the base, and the pusher edge for crumbs.
Brush gently. Wipe away loose debris with a clean, soft cloth. Check the pads underneath for trapped grit, which can scratch your table and mat.
Lift, don't drag. Pick racks straight up off the mat instead of sliding them. Dragging scuffs both the rack and the mat.
Wipe off fingerprints. A barely damp microfiber cloth takes care of smudges. Dry the rack right away, keeping moisture away from hinges and joints.
Cleaning Acrylic
Acrylic looks like glass, but it doesn't clean like glass.
The safe routine: mild soap, water, and a soft microfiber cloth, then dry right away.
Never use:
- Window or glass cleaner. Ammonia can cloud acrylic or leave fine cracks.
- Alcohol, sanitizing wipes, or hand sanitizer. These can craze or fog the surface.
- Solvents, adhesive removers, or abrasive creams and pads.
- The dishwasher. Heat and detergent can warp, cloud, or loosen parts.
Cloudy patches and scratches: a cloudy spot may be surface damage rather than dirt, and rubbing harder can make it worse. Don't try to buff out a scratch or use a polishing kit. Reach out to us first.
Pushers and Moving Parts
Check the action. Move each pusher through its full range and make sure nothing sticks. Clear any debris you can reach without taking the rack apart.
Don't force anything. Never force a stiff hinge or bend a pusher arm back into shape. A stiff mechanism may need adjustment or a replacement part, not more pressure.
Skip household lubricants. Oils and sprays can migrate onto your tiles and mat.
Storing Your Racks
Separate them. Store each rack in its own sleeve or slot, or with dividers between them, so they don't scrape each other. Keep them away from loose tiles and metal accessories.
Support them. Racks should lie flat and fully supported, so the case closes without pressing on them.
Store them indoors, away from sunlight, heat, and damp.
